What is a Carer?
A Carer is someone who, without payment, looks after or provides help and support to a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour who could not manage without their help.
Often referred to as 'Family Carers' or 'Unpaid Carers', the term Carer should not be confused with a care assistant or care worker who is employed and receives payment for looking after someone.
Are you a Carer?
Many Carers do not see themselves as Carers or realise the impact that caring is having on their lives. Becoming a Carer can often mean giving up employment, income and pension rights. It can lead to isolation, depression, frustration and ill-health.
Often, Carers don't realise what help is available to them; how they can access that help; who is available to give them advice and support or how they can just get a break.
If you are a carer, by registering with the Carers' Centre in your area, you can access advice and support. Click on 'Carers' Services' on the Menu bar at the top of the page for more information.
